Potential Health Effects
Eye Contact: Irritating to eyes, redness, tearing, blurred vision.
Skin Contact: Irritation to skin, defatting, dermatitis. Irritating to eyes, redness, tearing, blurred vision. Dimethyl sulfoxide is rapidly absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes and may produce smarting, redness or contact dermatitis. It has also produced garlic-like breath, headache, sedation, diarrhea, and disturbances in color vision in some individuals after dermal contact. It may accelerate the skin absorption of other materials including toxics. Wash thoroughly after handling.
Inhalation: Respiratory tract irritation may occur. Vapor harmful. Gross overexposure (more than 50,000 ppm) have produced chemical pneumonia and death in experimental animals.
Ingestion: Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Based on animal data, large oral dosages can produce bloody urine, kidney damage, or liver damage. The estimated mean lethal single dose in an adult human male exceeds 1 liter.

Chronic health effects
From MSDS:
Persons with severe skin, liver or kidney problems should avoid use. Repeated skin exposure can result in allergic sensitization and scaling dermatitis. Dimethyl sulfoxide may accelerate the absorption of toxic materials through the skin. These materials may exhibit chronic health effects.

Handling information
Isolate from oxidizers, alkalis, heat, and open flame. Use only with adequate ventilation. Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Wear OSHA Standard full face shield. Consult Safety Equipment Supplier. Wear gloves, apron and footwear impervious to this material. Wash clothing before reuse. Avoid free fall of liquid. Ground containers when transferring. Do not flame cut, braze, or weld. Empty container very hazardous! Continue all label precautions! Store large amounts in structures made for OSHA Class III-A liquids. Isolate from strong oxidants. Keep container
tightly closed and upright when not in use to prevent leakage. -

First Aid
Eye Contact: For eyes, flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes and get medical attention.
Skin Contact: In case of contact with skin immediately remove contaminated clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
Inhalation: After high vapor exposure, remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing has stopped, trained personnel should immediately begin artificial respiration. If the heart has stopped, trained personnel should immediately begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. Do NOT give liquids to an unconscious or convulsing person.
